Tennis Elbow

With Sachin Tendulkar making headlines with his ‘tennis elbow’ injury, These injuries usually occur due to a various overuse of the elbows. These overuse injuries caused mainly due to over excessive activity which requires the repetitive motion of the arm and the wrist as well.

Now both these injuries are a form of epicondylitis which is an inflammation of tendons that attach the elbow. Tennis elbow injury affects the lateral or external epicondyle.

Symptoms of Tennis Elbow

Symptoms of tennis elbow:

Pain from a tennis elbow injury is usually surrounding the external part of the elbow to the forearm and wrist. The pain from the injury is not constant in nature and mainly occurs while grabbing or lifting something. It is important to consult a reputed doctor to make sure the correct diagnosis is made.

Golfer’s Elbow

Medial epicondylitis is an irritation in the inner part of the elbow and arm. The golfer’s elbow is mainly caused by continuous twisting or flexing of the wrist. Tasks such as shovelling, throwing a ball, gardening or playing golf as such can cause  golfer’s elbow as it results in overuse of forearm muscles.

Symptoms of Golfer's Elbow

Symptoms:

One of the main symptoms of Golfer’s elbow is the pain on the inside of the elbow especially when lifting the wrist or the hand, twisting the forearm or making a fist. The area of the elbow is usually slightly swollen and even tender to touch.

Treatment for Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow:

Giving the elbow adequate rest helps in the recovery of the elbow in the case of tennis and golf elbow injury. It usually takes several weeks for the elbow to regain its full functioning without any kind of pain.

Applying ice on the inflamed area helps in the reduction of swelling along with consistently doing exercises which stretch and strengthen the muscles on the forearm.

In extreme cases, doctors may also suggest therapy for the arm. It is mainly physical therapy and helps in managing the condition.
