The air enters your body through your nose & mouth and enters your nasal cavity present inside your nose. It is a mucous membrane that keeps your nose moist. It also contains tiny hair to filter out air and blocks dirt and dust from entering your lungs. When you breathe through your mouth, the air enters your oral cavity. When you breathe through the mouth, the air gets moisturized, but it is not filtered.

From the nasal cavity, the air enters into the trachea or windpipe. The trachea delivers the air into the lungs. The oxygen in the lungs will be absorbed by the blood and supplied to all the remaining body parts. Now the air reaches the diaphragm. When you breathe the diaphragm expands because the oxygen flows through the trachea into the large tubes of your lungs known as “bronchi.”

From bronchi, the air enters into bronchioles surrounded by cilia and a thin film of mucus upward to the pharynx and is then swallowed into the esophagus. This systematic procedure allows you to clean your respiratory system. The air from bronchioles enters into the alveoli, tiny air sacs. In the alveoli, the oxygen gets separated from the rest and is transferred to the nearby blood vessels.

Now, the oxygen is transferred to remaining blood vessels through hemoglobin, and it rushes until it reaches the left side of the heart. While moving through the blood vessels, hemoglobin returns the carbon dioxide and other metabolic wastes to your lungs. The carbon dioxide releases out when you exhale.
